Under The Midnight Sun

It’s just around midsummer and we’re just coming from the first site of the evening, a nice rocky beach in the north of the Lofoten Islands. Though nice, the conditions were far from perfect so we decided to move along the road looking for different locations. After a stop for a panorama, we discover this place. The sun is at its lowest, but still way above the horizon. It’s direct light slightly diffused by the mountains behind me and lights the scene just beautifully.

Berlevag Lighthouse

It’s the second day up here in most north part of Norway. So far I drove about 1500 km of my total 2500 km in three days. I arrived a day earlier in one of the heaviest storms I have encountered in my life. In fact it almost broke the back of my car when I tried to access the gear stored in the trunk. Luckily in the evening the weather calmed down and I found some nice locations which were protected from the storm.

Fossil Rock

Here I am in the Finnmark area way up in the north of Norway on a beautiful rocky beach. The weather finally calmed down and the evening presents it’s best in beautiful and warm light. I have been exploring this area already during the daytime and returned to these places just in time. It was Worldwide Photowalk on this day and I had my own here at the coast. These vertical aligned rock formations were typical in this area.

Rocked Tree

Todays explore starts on a beach called Utakleiv on the north coast of the Lofoten islands. Waiting in beautiful sunlight the whole day for the sun to set, or better to get at least closer to the horizon, just in time for the golden hour clouds show up. A little too much for my taste. While the scenery is still great, it appears that the conditions might be a little better on another part of the island.

Arctic Beach #1

It was on our first day we spent in Tromsö. Even though the weather conditions were promising during the day they changed just in time for happy hour. Still I liked the cold, steely atmosphere of the light. When we passed this beach I quickly pulled over the car, took out my gear and tried to make my way through the piles of snow which were covering the areas next to the next.

Lyngen Fjord

Isn’t this a wonderful location? Taken on our last day on the way home, we checked out a new location and what a reward and view it was. The sun was already high up in the sky but still the quality of the light wasn’t too harsh and it lit this scene for us, giving it a rather arctic feeling. While I was composing this image we noticed a group of whales (which we confirmed in the meanwhile as killer whales) passing by.

Vintage Boat

Old fishing boats have something mystical about them. Is it the structures of the wood which is revealed under the rotting paint, the shapes or are it the childhood memories which are evoked through a boat like this. I don’t know, but every time I run into a boat like this I can’t resist trying to capture it beauty. And this one is no exception. I’m standing next to the tripod, hoping the layer of snow and hope it doesn’t give in during the exposure and ruin the perspective.

Blue Hour

Tromsö, Norway: The first day. The weather proves to be unpredictable, while having a beautiful sky with clouds an sunlight during the day, lot’s of clouds appear just in time before before sunset and cover the sky with a layer clouds. Still the light has this wonderful cold, blue and steelish quality and there were many good photo opportunities on our way, ending with this one on our way home.

Norway Revisited

It’s only a few weeks since I had been visiting the beautiful scenery of Norway, but it feels a long time ago and since work and basic life have come back it feels I have to go back as soon as possible. It has to wait for another year though… The few days me and my wonderful girlfriend had there had passed too quickly and we were lucky to find good weather conditions.
